La Padorniña

The heart of El Bierzo

Gently sloping hillsides, clay soils under the sun, La Padorniña, the perfect place for Mencía and Godello to reach their full intensity. This is the place where our organic wines are born and where they develop their marked personality.

The creation of Tenoira Winery is linked to the site of La Padorniña, in Villafranca del Bierzo (León), a highly appreciated estate which in the 1970s produced the best wines of the locality.

So much so that it gave its name to its best wine: La Padorniña an emblem for the members of the cooperative and the pride of the neighbors. But a few years later the brand disappeared.

And it is here, however, where the history of Bodegas Tenoira begins and, at the same time, the recovery of the most beloved vineyard in Villafranca and of the La Padorniña brand.

Mencía and Godello, our native varieties

In 1990 the Tenoira Gayoso family bought the largest farm in the area, of about twenty hectares, which was abandoned. During the next ten years, they dedicated themselves to other agricultural work that helped to significantly improve the abandoned land. In 2000 the planting of the new Mencía and Godello vineyards began.

Certified organic vineyard

La Padorniña is an estate of clay soils with pebbles. It has a microclimate of continental and Atlantic influence, at an altitude of five hundred meters above sea level and facing southwest. Such a place could only be improved by converting to organic farming. In 2020 the Tenoira Gayoso winery obtained organic farming certification for all its wines.

When the new labeling of minor geographical units (paraje, villa, etc) was approved in 2020, La Padorniña wines obtained the category of paraje wine, which requires reducing the grape yield (kilograms per hectare) between 20% and 35% of the maximum set by the Bierzo Designation of Origin.
